Future Bakers Will Soon Enjoy Enhanced Learning

It's a new and innovative learning resource for young bakers.

In the digital era, tech tools are indispensable. We use them to help us get from point A to point B, keep track of our expenses, and even learn new things. They’re also instruments for development. When used correctly, they can bring hope and help to those who need them.

URC Flour Division is well aware of the benefits of using technology for advancement. Together with the Department of Education (DepEd), they developed a multimedia toolkit for teachers and senior high school students. This technical vocational (techvoc) course offers senior high school students leading-edge learning. Aside from this toolkit, URC Flour is also donating a year's worth of flour products to these nominated schools.

Multimedia teachers

This Multimedia Teachers’ Toolkit on Bread and Pastry Production is a useful resource. There are short videos on the science of baking. Programs showing baking methods and techniques are also included in the toolkit. Lecture slides on baking equipment, tools, and ingredients complete the learning experience. The toolkit will also cover other topics about Bread and Pastry Production that are part of the K-12 curriculum.

Teachers who aren’t tech savvy can also enjoy this specialized toolkit. It comes with an enhanced manual containing lesson plans, assessment tools, and standardized tested bread and pastry recipes. Also included in the kit is a recipe book and power point presentations.

Perfecting the program

URC Flour tapped Knowledge Community Inc. to develop the multimedia toolkit. This Philippine-based non-stock, non-profit organization creates innovative solutions to local community problems. With the help of professionals and volunteers in the fields of education, community development, and social entrepreneurship, the company can tailor-fit a variety of educational programs.

Aside from collaborating on the toolkit, DepEd and URC Flour also put in place other projects. They support activities that strengthen the bread and pastry production curriculum of local schools.

A slice of the pie

For the initial launch, URC Flour will donate these learning resources to 11 public senior high schools for Grade 11 and 12 students. The initial list of beneficiaries of the project include the following schools:

  1. Makati – Makati High School, Fort Bonifacio High School, and Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino High School
  2. Pasig – Rizal High School and Sta. Lucia High School
  3. Davao City – Catalunan Pequeno National High School, Optaciano Hilay National High School, Mulig National High School Annex, Don Enrique Bustamante National High School, Camansi National High School, Mahayag National High School, and CP Garcia Senior High School

The baking course is part of the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood track for Grade 12 students. Once a student passes the competency-based assessment of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the student obtains a National Certificate Level II (NC II). With proper accreditation, one can already earn a living or work as a commercial baker.

URC Flour’s and DepEd’s forward-thinking projects pave the way for modern ways of learning. Though old-school techniques are still valuable, innovative tools can put us at the forefront of globalization.
