Robinsons Hotels & Resorts Does its Part for Children’s Rights

RHR commits to protect children from abuse and exploitation

The growth of the Philippine tourism industry has been nothing short of phenomenal in recent years. From welcoming approximately 3.5 million visitors in 2010, the number of foreign visitors has more than doubled since then as the country recorded 7.1 million visitors last year. However, it’s not all good news.

With the rising number of tourists and its related infrastructure development around the country, comes the increased chance of the sexual exploitation of women and children. Tackling this problem is not just the duty of the national government and its agencies like the Philippine National Police and the Department of Tourism; the protection of women and children is everybody’s responsibility.

Recognizing this, Robinsons Hotels & Resorts organized a training session on “Child Safeguarding and Protection” on September 13, 2019, conducted by Dr. Dolores Alforte, the executive director of ECPAT-Philippines in partnership with UNICEF. ECPAT-Philippines, formerly known by its full name, End Child Prostitution and Trafficking, works to prevent the sexual exploitation and abuse of children and focuses on youth empowerment and victim rehabilitation.

The training/workshop provided a framework for development and capacity-building on child safeguarding and protection in the hospitality industry. Through Dr. Alforte’s lecture and practical exercises, employees of Robinsons Hotels and Resorts gained valuable insights on children’s rights and their protection. With the continuing partnership and guidance of ECPAT, the properties and employees under the Robinsons Hotels & Resorts banner—these include Crowne Plaza Galleria, Holiday Inn Galleria, the Summit Hotels chain, and the Go Hotels brand—will strive to further raise awareness and protect Filipino children suffering from violence, abuse, and exploitation.
