The First JG Summit Safety Milestone Awards, or SMile for short, took place on July 5, 2019, at the Crowne Plaza Galleria.

The event recognized the efforts of the conglomerate’s various business units who contributed significantly in establishing the foundation for a sustainable EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) culture. The simple awards ceremony was preceded by a briefing on the current safety record of the company by the general manager of the Corporate Energy Group and Head of Corporate EHS, Cesar Camaongay, followed by a message from JG Summit Holdings President and CEO Lance Y. Gokongwei.

In his report, Camaongay outlined the most common injuries reported in the workplace and identified the BUs that currently pose a relatively high risk to workers compared to other BUs in the conglomerate. He also laid out current and future programs of the Corporate EHS group, which include creating the Corporate EHS Policy, Personal Protective Equipment Policy, and Contractor’s EHS Requirements Policy; implementing the monthly EHS performance monitoring; evaluating threats and highlighting good practice through EHS assessment; and finally, streamlining the incident reporting and EHS performance monitoring through the newly developed EHS Performance Dashboard Web Application, which went live on June 30, 2019.

Two speakers were invited to the event, giving talks about work safety best practices and building a culture of EHS in organization. The first was Engineer Bernadette R. Evangelista-Alvarez, the Environment Health and Safety Manager of Sunpower Philippines and a DOLE-accredited occupational safety and health consultant. She was followed on stage by Edilberto R. Collantes, the safety manager of JG Summit Petrochemical Corporation. Heading the Safety, Health and Environment Department, Collantes has 25 years of experience in occupational safety, health and environment matters.

Speaking just before the awards were handed out, JG Summit President and CEO Lance Gokongwei commended the efforts of the CEHS group towards achieving its goal of creating a safe workplace and making safety a way of life among JG Summit’s employees. By tracking three metrics—cases of first aid, medical treatment, and lost time incidents—it can be observed that corporate safety awareness has improved since the CEHS group started its programs.

While reported cases of first aid treatment went up, Mr. Gokongwei noted that “in terms of more serious issues, medical treatment incidents and lost time incidents decreased by 47% and 39%, respectively, versus the same period last year. Congratulations to all of you. This is a positive signal that this is the right thing to do. All of you are buying in, and taking this task and responsibility that you have very seriously and diligently.”

“Considering we have nearly 80,000 people working for us, around 40,000 regular and 40,000 contractual employees, I think we have a responsibility to create a workplace that is free from hazards and risks so that our workers will be happier and more assured if they believe that they are working in a very safe environment. Their families will be even happier, if they have that feeling that their parents, brothers and sisters, or their children, are working in an environment that is free from health risks and is safe,” said Mr. Gokongwei.

Cesar Camaongay, general manager of the Corporate Energy Group and Head of Corporate EHS; Lance Y. Gokongwei; EHS managers. URC BCFG EHS managers Sherwin Raquel, Joane de Guzman and Sheryl Lenn Galas; URC SURE EHS manager Rena Joy Sardan; and JG Summit Corporate EHS Manager George Sebastian.

The first SMile Awards had two main categories. The I Smile Award was presented to business units that achieved an LTI frequency rate within the average of their respective industries as reported by the Philippines Statistics Authority. Another requirement was the timely and complete submission of monthly EHS performance monitoring reports for 2018.

The JGSHI President and Chief Executive Officer's Award was presented to BUs who met the same criteria, but also have in place an EHS policy and/or EHS management system in their companies.

Aside from these two main awards, there was a Special Citation presented to select Group EHS managers. Receiving on behalf of URC BCFG were Sherwin Raquel, Sheryl Lenn Galas, and Joane de Guzman; while Rena Joy Sardan received the citation for URC SURE.
