A household name in the Philippines for more than 60 years, Universal Robina Corporation’s continuing expansion in Asia and Oceania has made it a beloved brand in newer markets as well.

URC’s subsidiary in Thailand recently reaped a slew of awards demonstrating that the food manufacturing company has not only successfully penetrated the Thai market, but it has also become recognized as an employer of choice. URC (Thailand) Co. Ltd.’s distinctions in 2020 include winning the No. 1 Brand award in Thailand, receiving Thailand’s FDA Quality Award for Year 2020, and being named among the “Best Companies to Work for in Asia.”

Established in 1992, URC Thailand produces and distributes a broad range of snack and confectionary products such as Fun-O, Tivoli, Roller Coaster, Dewberry, Cream-O, Lush, Dynamite, and Wiggles. It has a factory, research and development center, and warehouses at the Samutsakorn Industrial Estate, and a head office in Bangkok.

Through a nationwide survey conducted by the business magazine Marketeer in partnership with Kadence International (Thailand), a leading market research agency, it emerged in September that URC Thailand’s Jack ’n Jill Fun-O was the most popular brand in the biscuits and crackers category. As a result, Marketeer recognized Fun-O as the No. 1 Brand in Thailand for 2019-2020 in the aforementioned category.

“This award inspires us even more to continue delighting our Thai consumers with innovative and world-class products,” said URC Thailand Marketing Director Jane Bernardo.

The company received more good news in late September when it secured the FDA Quality Award for Year 2020, presented by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health. URC Thailand was the only Filipino-owned company to receive this distinction in the food category, being recognized for its use of efficient systems to manufacture safe and high-quality products for its customers. It was also lauded for implementing socially responsible projects, reflecting the growing role of Sustainability in the operations of its parent conglomerate, JG Summit Holdings.

“Receiving this award is one of the company’s successes, as providing safe and quality products to our consumers is a collaboration of everyone in the organization,” said URC Quality Assurance and Quality Management System Manager Boonyarat Chunet. “We will stay committed and plan to further uplift the quality system of our organization to bring it to the next level.”

The most recent of this trio of distinctions followed in October, when it was revealed that URC Thailand had been named among the “Best Companies to Work for in Asia” by HR Asia, a respected trade publication for HR professionals. Cited for having a “work culture that values its employees as key resources,” URC Thailand was among 38 companies to be recognized out of a field of 138 firms

“We promote a culture of openness and collaboration where all employees are always given the opportunity to develop their individual performance and contribute to the business objectives,” said Matthew Dy, URC Thailand’s HR director.

Dy said this is achieved through a “robust performance management system, career planning, and individual development plans” aimed at creating a “future-ready organization.”

The winning companies were selected through a survey that measured different aspects of employee engagement. These covered culture and ethics, leadership and organization, active initiatives, emotional engagement, employee intention and motivation, behavior and advocacy, collective consciousness, workplace sentiment, and team dynamics.
