The enhanced community quarantine that continues to grip various cities and regions across the Philippines has pushed many individuals into the front lines of the battle against COVID-19. Many modern-day heroes have emerged and are being recognized for their valiant efforts in ensuring continuous essential services during this time of difficulty.

Healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff are among those who immediately come to mind as frontliners, but there are also unsung heroes in the related field of pharmaceutical retail who are similarly putting their lives at risk as they serve the health and wellness needs of their fellow Filipinos.

These pharmacists and the rest of the stores' personnel who continue to bravely man drugstores and pharmacies are among the bright lights that Robinsons Retail Holdings, Inc.’s Southstar Drug recognizes. “We call our employees ‘stars’ in their own right. Given these challenging times, they have proven to us how brightly they shine with their dedication and perseverance in making sure our stores remain open. It is because of them that we can continue to provide for our customers’ wellness needs,” said general manager Christine Tueres.

Keeping stores open and operations running poses numerous challenges, but Southstar Drug knows it is for the greater good, not only for their employees but for their customers as well. Pharmacists and retail staff are still able to earn their keep, and Southstar Drug provides additional support through meal allowances, shuttle services in selected areas, and provisions of surgical gloves, germicidal soap, and vitamin supplements for its frontliner employees.

For added safety, store premises are sanitized regularly and social distancing is strictly implemented. Drugstore counters have been fitted with plastic sheets to act as protective barriers against the transmission of the virus for the mutual benefit of store personnel and customers.

As the global COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose a threat to public health, drugstores play a crucial part in ensuring public access to life-saving medicine and wellness products. In keeping Filipinos healthy and strong, Southstar Drug employees are ready, willing, and able to do their part.

To further serve the community, Southstar Drug has activated its E-commerce platform well ahead of schedule. Now serving the National Capital Region, the site, which had its Beta-testing launch in December 2019, has more than 3,000 products on offer. Heeding market demand and the public’s need to have their medicines delivered to their residences, the team behind the site worked on expediting the launch, which was originally slated for public release in 2021.
