Angelo Ascue of Robinsons Hotels and Resorts Is the 2023 "Manager of the Year"

The young hotel manager earned the coveted title at the 26th Mabuhay Awards

In recognition of his leadership excellence, Angelo Ascue, hotel manager for Summit Hotel Greenhills and Summit Hotel Magnolia, was named "Manager of the Year" at the 26th Mabuhay Awards. Summit Hotels and Resorts is a proudly home-grown brand of Robinsons Hotels and Resorts (RHR), owned and operated by Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), the real estate arm of JG Summit Holdings.

Ascue's triumph is a testament to his exceptional leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering dedication to the hospitality industry. The Mabuhay Awards’ evaluation criteria, based on business unit development, team motivation, situational and functional leadership, strategic planning, decision-making, and problem-solving, underscored Ascue’s exemplary contributions to RHR’s continued growth and success.

Celebrating with Angelo Ascue, Mabuhay Awards' Manager of the Year (third from left), are Jesse Raymond Chua, General Manager of Grand Summit General Santos; Annalyn Yap, Robinsons Hotels and Resorts Vice President; and Jose Marie Ouano, General Manager of Summit Ridge Tagaytay.

"I will forever be honored to have been the first employee to give Robinsons Hotels and Resorts its first Mabuhay Awards Manager of the Year award," shared Ascue shortly after the Mabuhay Awards ceremony, held on November 27, 2023, at the Westin Manila in Mandaluyong City.

Though he is one of the youngest hotel managers of Robinsons Hotels and Resorts at just 33 years old, Ascue already has more than a decade’s worth of experience in the hospitality sector. Prior to his current role, he served as the Cluster Assistant Director of Sales for Luzon, navigating challenges posed by the pandemic and contributing significantly to the pre-opening operations of various RHR properties.

Ascue’s approach to leadership is characterized by a staunch adherence to the Seven M's of Filipino values, namely Maka-Diyos (symbolizing Integrity), Makatao at Masayahin (Hospitality and Service), Makabansa (Patriotism), May Pag-Asa (Resilience), May Bayanihan (Teamwork), and Maka-Kalikasan (Environmentalism), making him a true champion of what the Department of Tourism calls the “Filipino Brand of Service Excellence.”

The recognition as the Mabuhay Awards’ Manager of the Year celebrates not only Ascue's individual accomplishments, it also reflects the commitment to excellence maintained by the entire Robinsons Hotels and Resorts organization.

“We at Robinsons Hotels and Resorts are delighted that Gelo, one of our very own, has won the very prestigious award for Manager of the Year. The Mabuhay Awards recognizes the best talent in the industry and promotes a culture of service excellence among Filipino hospitality professionals. This is a great testimony of the amazing talent that works with us and a well-deserved recognition for Angelo for all his hard work and commitment in driving operational excellence at his hotels,” commented Barun Jolly, Senior Vice President and Business Unit General Manager of RHR.

Annalyn Yap, Vice President of RHR, proudly added, “Gelo is an embodiment of our next-generation leaders – committed, steadfast, driven – and welcoming of change, technology, and innovation. He is a gem of a leader and a torchbearer of Filipino hospitality at its finest.”

Hosted by the Association of Human Resources Managers in the Hospitality Industry (AHRM), the esteemed Mabuhay Awards program honors outstanding achievements by managers, supervisors, and other employees in the hospitality sector.

Established in 1975, AHRM has been a beacon for recognizing excellence in the hotel and restaurant industry. The journey began with the inception of the Gawad Lingkod Award in 1984, a pioneering service excellence program honoring the contributions of rank-and-file staff. Evolving with the times, the program transitioned into the Mabuhay Awards in 1995, covering a broader spectrum of the industry.
