Big Win for Climate Action: Robinsons Malls Takes Center Stage at QC Green Awards

RLC’s malls in Quezon City honored for their impactful sustainability initiatives

For its long-standing dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility, Robinsons Malls received two awards at the inaugural Quezon City Green Awards, held at Novotel Manila on October 6, 2023.

In the words of Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, the new awards program serves “to honor the guardians of our planet and those who have made it their mission to create a greener and safer world.” With two main categories – Green and Resiliency – the awards recognize outstanding programs, projects, and best practices in Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction by barangays, organizations, youth, and businesses in Quezon City.

In the awards’ Green category, Robinsons Magnolia secured the Excellence in Climate Action Award for its Green Residuals Waste Management Program, which focuses on residual waste management, proper waste segregation at the source, and recycling. It also has a composting component, wherein organic food waste undergoes composting and is then used in the mall’s green landscaping, effectively diverting a significant amount of waste from landfills.

Recognizing the program’s noteworthy impact on the environment, the local government of Quezon City presented Robinsons Magnolia with a trophy and a Php 100,000 cash grant to be used in the implementation of the mall’s sustainability projects.

In the same category, Robinsons Novaliches earned a Special Citation in Climate Action for its various sustainability initiatives, such as the use of solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, water conservation systems, and waste management programs. The mall also actively promotes environmental awareness and engagement among its employees and customers.

The awards earned by Robinsons Malls’ developments in Quezon City highlight the meaningful sustainability programs undertaken by its parent company, Robinsons Land Corporation. Throughout its operations across the country, the real estate development arm of JG Summit Holdings has committed to increase the use of renewable energy sources, improve water conservation efforts, optimize energy consumption through greater efficiency, and minimize waste generation. At its malls, it also actively promotes environmental awareness and engagement through its mall-wide consumer plastic waste collection, trash to cash, and bottles to plants initiatives.

Robinsons Malls has been a focal point of RLC’s renewable energy efforts, with the company’s installation of solar panels at 24 of its malls. As indicated in its most recent sustainability report, these malls have saved a total of 1.1 billion pesos in electricity costs and avoided a total of 98,951 Tonnes of CO2 emissions which is equivalent to 1.6 million trees planted.

According to the report, RLC plans to install additional solar panels at its other malls every year, eventually expanding to other real estate properties. The goal is to install solar panels in two malls every year moving forward, helping the company realize its long-term sustainability objectives.
