Robinsons Malls Leads in Use of Solar Energy in Shopping Malls

Robinsons Land ramps up the use of this clean energy source in 23 sites nationwide

Climate change is a global concern. According to environment experts, the planet, as a whole, should reduce its carbon emissions significantly by 2030 if there’s any hope of keeping the Earth’s average temperature rise to well below 2°C by 2050. The change required to turn things around, however, begins in our own backyard, or in this case, our own rooftops.

In its latest sustainability update, Robinsons Land Corporation announced the expansion of its solar energy portfolio to 23 Robinsons Malls nationwide, increasing its total renewable clean energy capacity to 29.5 MW. This doesn’t just keep electricity costs low, but also reduces the country’s carbon footprint and protects the environment.

“Through energy conservation and efficiency programs like this, RLC demonstrates its commitment to protect the environment from the adverse effects of carbon emissions, and to become an industry leader in efficient energy use,” states RLC’s 2020 annual report.

The real estate giant began its clean energy journey when it installed its first solar energy panels in 2015. As of 2020, it has generated 92,084,091 kWh of clean energy for its own use, successfully eliminating 65,260 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

In layman’s terms, this number is equivalent to preventing carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions from:

  • 7,859 homes’ energy use for one year (carbon dioxide)
  • 7,343,310 gallons of gasoline consumed (carbon dioxide)
  • 7,938,399,108 smartphones charged (carbon dioxide)
  • 14,193 passenger vehicles driven for one year (greenhouse gas emissions)

RLC’s efforts to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions are also comparable to the following:

  • 2,776,780 trash bags of waste that are recycled instead of landfilled (greenhouse gas emissions)
  • Six wind turbines running for one year (greenhouse gas emissions)
  • 1,079,088 tree seedlings grown for 10 years (carbon sequestered)
  • 79,955 acres (approx. 32,356 hectares) of forests for a year (carbon sequestered)

While there is still a lot more ground to cover, RLC is determined to continue growing its capacity to produce clean energy, one solar panel at a time.

The 23 solar-powered sites are located in Robinsons Place Palawan, Robinsons Place Angeles, Robinsons Starmills Pampanga, Robinsons Novaliches, Robinsons Place Pangasinan, Robinsons Ilocos Norte, Robinsons Place Naga, Robinsons Place Santiago, Robinsons Place Iloilo, Robinsons Place Antique, Robinsons Place Dumaguete, Robinsons Place Roxas, Robinsons Place Tacloban, Robinsons Cybergate Bacolod, Robinsons Place Jaro, Robinsons Galleria Cebu, Robinsons Cybergate Cebu, Robinsons Place Pavia, Robinsons Place Ormoc, Robinsons Place Tacloban Expansion, Robinsons Place Tagum, Robinsons General Santos, and Robinsons Place Iligan.
