Sweet Success: URC Sugar and Renewables–Passi (Iloilo) Reaps DENR Award

URC SURE Passi’s sustainability initiatives earn praise from the Environmental Management Bureau

For its outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability and community support, URC Sugar and Renewables-Passi was recently presented with a Gawad Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Award by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Presented on June 27, 2024, at the Diversion 21 Hotel in Iloilo City, the Gawad EMB recognition program acknowledges partners of the Bureau that have made impactful contributions to environmental management and sustainability.

Among the notable initiatives undertaken by URC SURE-Passi to secure the award was the implementation of a comprehensive waste management system that includes the segregation of solid waste, recycling programs, and the proper disposal of hazardous materials. In addition, the company has invested in modern technologies to reduce carbon emissions and lower its energy consumption, such as the installation of energy-efficient machinery and the use of renewable energy sources like biomass and solar power.

The company is also a keen supporter of several reforestation projects, with company volunteers planting thousands of trees in partnership with local communities and environmental groups. These efforts not only help to restore local ecosystems but also enhance biodiversity and combat climate change. To further enhance these noble objectives, URC SURE-Passi regularly conducts environmental awareness campaigns, educating its employees and the local community on sustainable practices and the importance of environmental stewardship.

These initiatives are a testament to the company’s strong values and “malasakit” culture, demonstrating how its employees “Move Forward Fast” in adopting technology and other innovations that allow URC to reduce its environmental footprint while dutifully adhering to its corporate social responsibilities.

The awards ceremony was attended by Environment, Health, and Safety Manager Nimshi Virnite B. Torre-Bartizo and Human Resources Assistant Frances Camille Hojilla. Also in attendance were LGU representatives from Region 6 (Western Visayas) as well as several private sector partners, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between various stakeholders in promoting environmental sustainability.

In a statement, the company said the Gawad EMB award reflects the hard work and dedication of the entire URC SURE Passi team. “We are one in celebrating with all our attendees and the rest of the team behind SURE-Passi who have given us a great milestone that represents our collective values and objectives. This achievement not only honors our past efforts but also inspires us to continue innovating and contributing towards a more sustainable future.”
