On March 23, 2019, 75 grade school students from the Numancia Central Elementary School took part in a “Lakbay Aral” activity, a field trip to the Sayak Airport in Siargao, where they boarded a Cebu Pacific plane and learned about the basics of flying, flight safety, and possible careers in the airline industry.

The field trip was requested by Carlos Joseph Feria, a teaching fellow of the Teach For the Philippines organization who has been assigned to Numancia Central Elementary School. Located in Del Carmen, a fifth-class municipality in Siargao, the school serves the educational needs of children of mostly farmers and fishermen.

In his request to the country’s leading airline, Feria wrote, “This would be a wonderful opportunity to help in the education and formation of our young people from far-flung islands. As teachers, this would not only permit us to be a partner of the Department of Education in achieving quality education but would also serve as an avenue for us to strengthen our eagerness to serve the Filipino youth with excellent and relevant education for all.”

As children from underprivileged backgrounds, it was the first time they had set foot inside an airplane. Onboard the aircraft, the children were guided by the Cebu Pacific crew composed of Capt. Abraham Bernal, First Officer Yvan Mikael Salazar, and flight attendants Sunshine Escat and Kiel Vitasa. Besides learning about the airline industry, the children were also taught about Cebu Pacific’s award-winning Juan Effect campaign. The long-term CSR project focusing on sustainable and environment-friendly tourism is a multi-sectoral advocacy in partnership with the Philippine Department of Tourism,  supported by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department of Interior and Local Government.

During the Lakbay Aral activity, the children also received gift packs from Universal Robina Corporation (URC). In a video posted on Cebu Pacific’s Facebook page after the field trip, Feria spoke on behalf of the children and Numancia Central Elementary School as he expressed his gratitude. “Thank you very much, Cebu Pacific, for giving us this opportunity to bring our students here. I’m sure this will be another opportunity for students to learn more and appreciate that learning can take place even outside the classroom.”
